Porgy in the American opera Porgy and Bess, was Jackson's
teacher during her studies at the Curtis Institute.
Jackson had an exceptional military career and retired from
the United States Air Force in 2002. During her tenure in
the Air Force, Jackson was the director of public affairs
and guest artist coordinator for The United States Air Force
Band in Washington, D. C. Prior to holding this position,
Jackson was the Band's chief of marketing and media relations.
As a member of the Singing Sergeants, she was heard throughout
the United States and abroad as a featured soloist with The
Air Force Concert Band and Symphony Orchestra. The stunning
virtuosity and dramatic lyricism of her voice was a hallmark
of The United States Air Force Band in performances before
presidents, statesmen and military leaders from almost every
nation. Additionally, she performed coast to coast as a recitalist
and oratorio soloist. She won numerous awards and competitions
including regional Metropolitan Opera Auditions.
Widely recognized for her superior accomplishments, Jackson
was selected by Air Force Magazine as one of the eight most
interesting women in the first 50 years of the Air Force.
Additionally, she was chosen by the Thomas W. Anthony Chapter
of the Air Force Association to receive its Woman of Distinction
award in 2000. Jackson was selected by the Daughters of the
American Revolution as a recipient of the first annual Margaret
Cochran Corbin Award for exceptional military service.
Equally at home in classical, contemporary and popular musical
idioms, her powerful soprano voice and unequalled vocal talents
have been showcased on innumerable AF Band presentations,
including a nationally televised performance in honor of the
centennial of the Statue of Liberty. Her stirring, powerful
rendition of "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" was
heard in performance with the USAF Concert Band and The Singing
Sergeants at the amphitheater of Arlington National Cemetery.
Her unforgettable presentation of one of this country's most
patriotic melodies was met with thunderous applause and a
standing ovation led by President William Jefferson Clinton.
On October 10, 2001, her acappella rendition of "America
the Beautiful" was heard in over 220 countries on the
Larry King Live show. The performance has been hailed has
one of the finest and most stirring performances of this beloved
patriotic tune; it was sung with sheer beauty of tone, perfect
diction and with a poignant delivery that was heard by millions
of television viewers.
As the Guest Artist Coordinator for the Band's acclaimed Guest
Artist Series, her prodigious talents and musical skills single-handedly
built this series into one of the finest of its kind, coast
to coast. She has presented the world's premium artists of
stage, screen and recording, including such greats as Roy
Clark, José Feliciano, Roberta Peters, Melba Moore,
JoAnne Worley, Marie Osmond, Henry Mancini, Dame Cleo Laine,
John Dankworth, Morgan Freeman, Lena Horne, Helen Reddy, Nell
Carter, Ricky Skaggs, Leslie Uggams, Keiko Matsui, Leona Mitchell,
Janie Fricke, and the incomparable, Chaka Khan. Everyone one
of these world-renown figures accepted Jackson's invitation
to share their brilliant talents with sold out audiences at
the Historic Constitution Hall, and in all cases, these terrific
musicians performed without receiving a fee. She is known
throughout the Air Force, the Department of Defense and the
civilian musical community for her unique skills and ability
in coordinating celebrity appearances.
